Become a volunteer

In Denmark, we have two programmes you can volunteer through; you can apply to become an ESC volunteer through the ESC programme or an ICYE volunteer through the ICYE programme.

ESC Programme

  • 18 – 30 years old

  • EU-citizen or from partner country

  • Have not previously participated in ESC or EVS programmes

ESC (European Solidarity Corps) – Individual Volunteering, formerly called the EVS-programme, is a programme financed by the European Union where you can volunteer in Europe for 2-12 months.

ESC – Individual Volunteering is for EU citizens and for citizens from EU partner countries between the ages 18 to 30.

As an ESC-volunteer in Denmark, you can work with different projects dealing with topics such as education, children, animals, and more. As an ESC-volunteer you live and work with the locals, which brings you closer to the Danish lifestyles.

Take a look at the list of the list of ESC-projects in Denmark to see what is available right now and read through the application procedure. If you apply for more than one project, make sure to write a specific application for each project. Applications are only accepted when the project is available.

If you want to go to Denmark, we will recommend you to read our National Profile which is a very useful and fun guide for you. It consists of information about Denmark, the Danes, its culture, language, and traditions.
Besides this, it also informs you about the ESC-program and the preparations.

ICYE programme

  • 18 – 30 years old

  • From country with in ICYE organisation (global)

  • 6 or 12 month duration

The ICYE-programme is the long-term program where you can work for 6 or 12 months in countries all over the world.

The ICYE-programme is for the ages 18 to 30. You need to have another ICYE-organiation as your sending organisation. Find the list of ICYE-organiations on the international ICYE website and contact the one in your country or a neighbouring country.

ICYE Organisations

The program gives you the best prerequisites to get to know the Danish culture, language and people, and you can develop your social and work skills by teaching at a Danish style boarding school, taking care of children in a kindergarten, or planning different activities at an after school activity centre. As an ICYE-volunteer you live and work with the locals, which bring you closer to the Danish lifestyles.

You can choose to volunteer in 6 or 12 months starting from August or January.

If you choose to travel via the ICYE-program, you need to contact ICYE in your country. They will guide you through the process and prepare you for your journey.

Take a look at the list of the Danish ICYE projects to get an idea of the type of projects you can volunteer at and read our National Profile, which is a very useful and fun guide about volunteering in Denmark. It consists of information about Denmark, the Danes, its culture, language, and traditions.
