Description of the project

The school is located in Brabrand, a suburb to Aarhus, which is the second biggest city in Denmark, with approx. 300.000 inhabitants. Aarhus is situated on the east coast of Jutland in Denmark, and any other part of the country is within easy reach by public transport.

At the moment, Egebakkeskolen has 284 pupils, with a fairly equal balance between girls and boys. Most of the pupils live locally in Brabrand. The school is a private independent school with government subsidy. The pupils are between 6 and 16 years of age, from pre-school to 9th grade. The school puts an emphasis on foreign language acquisition and the pupils start learning English in the 1st form and German in the 5th.

Volunteer profile

  • previous experience working with children
  • willing to share knowledge about his/her language, culture and home country
  • fluent in German and high level of English

Volunteering at the school

  • the volunteer will be given a schedule that makes use of the volunteer’s academic and language skills
  • the volunteer can choose between two different types of main activities – listed below

Two different main activities

    1. Activity A – teaching German
The volunteer engages in teaching German as an assistant teacher. The volunteer will assist small groups of pupils, encouraging them to speak German in order to improve their oral German skills. This will be done through games, role plays, and other activities. The volunteer is more than welcome to suggest things and activities for the lessons.
Furthermore, the volunteer will get the opportunity to prepare and conduct lessons, where they teach the pupils about German traditions and traditions that are specific for the area that he/she comes from.
    2. Activity B – organizing leisure activities
The volunteer will be placed on our after-school programme, where he/she will organize leisure activities for the pupils. We especially concentrate on outdoor activities and put emphasis on activities that develop the children´s social skills.
The volunteer can join in activities planned by others but will also get a chance to plan activities on his/her own. A possible activity could be cooking together with, and for, the children.
It might also be that the volunteer’s activities and tasks will be a mixture of both options.
